Backwashing in the Fall

Your pool’s filter is the heart of your circulation system—working quietly behind the scenes to keep your water clear, safe, and inviting. Over time, dirt, debris, and fine particles build up inside your DE (Diatomaceous Earth) or sand filter, restricting water flow and putting strain on your pump. This makes backwashing in the fall essential to a healthy pool. With proactive pool care, backwashing is the process of reversing the flow of water, flushing out the accumulated debris and restoring your filter’s performance back to an effective rate. Without regular backwashing, your pool water can turn cloudy, and your equipment may struggle to keep up with the demands of daily filtration.

For sand filters, which are becoming a seldom used option for filter media, backwashing in the fall helps rinse away trapped particles between the grains of sand, ensuring water moves smoothly through the filter bed. DE filters, which rely on a fine layer of powder to trap microscopic debris, require similar maintenance to remove spent DE and contaminants. Both systems depend on consistent pressure readings—typically, when the pressure rises 8–10 PSI above normal, it’s time for a backwash. This is usually around 3-4 weeks when the poop pump runs for 10 hours a day. Ignoring these signs can reduce water clarity, shorten equipment lifespan, and lead to costly repairs down the line. Even worse, plastic parts of your system can be destroyed by the water pressure build up when the filter is clogged.
